Dulcimer

This used to be the folk music instrument par excellence: a handy person could make it himself, although there were quite a few carpenters/furniture makers who also made these kinds of instruments and sold them at annual fairs and such. Imagine a solid block of wood that is chiseled out and on which a thin piece of wood for the top is glued or nailed. Eye bolts could serve as tuning screws, frets in the form of triangular blocks of wood, glued to the top. The loosened cable from a bicycle brake could serve as strings: a loop made and hammered in place with a nail. That was all it had to be, although...
